Applications of Neural Networks to Real-time Data Processing at the Environmental and Molecular Sciences Laboratory1

Detailed design of the Environmental and Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL)2 is nearing completion and construction is scheduled to begin later this year. This facility will assist in the environmental restoration and waste management mission at the Hanford Site. This paper identifies several real-time data processing applications within the EMSL where neural networks can potentially be beneficial. These applications include realtime sensor data acquisition and analysis, spectral analysis, process control, theoretical modeling, and data compression.
